Reality TV lockdown style

I stumbled across an article about a pair of Peregrine Falcons nesting in downtown Melbourne today, and it included a link to a live cam feed of their nesting box.  I can’t stop watching it.

I think it’s the camera quality that’s keeping me glued to the feed.  That and somebody is actively controlling it, so occasionally it zooms in and it’s just too cool.

  1. Wow. And in the screen shot it looks like the falcon totally knows not only that the camera is there but also that there is someone at the other end, watching. Uncanny!

    1. It’s seriously uncanny; I am convinced they know people are watching, and they’re judging us for the intrusion on their privacy. 🙂

  2. Btw, the “I“ following the link to the webcam feed accidentally got included in the link tags — I copied and pasted the link into a new window to access the feed.

    1. It looks to be run by the real estate development company that runs the building. It’s very well done, but it seems they’re having trouble with the live stream only going 8 hours at a time; hopefully they’ll get that sorted out soon. Will be fascinating to watch once the eggs are laid/hatch.

        1. Hard to say – I’d guess there’s a certain cachet to having peregrine falcons nesting on your building – and they’ve apparently been there over a decade. I’d like to think it’s good PR, but who knows? Aussies are like anyone else in that sometimes it’s a great thing, and sometimes it’s a pain in the ass.

  3. LoL. That falcon does not look impressed. I love that there is a soy cam, tho. I bet it provided hours of entertainment.
A couple of friends put up a night-vision camera in their garden (out in the country) and it’s been amazing to see some of the pictures and videos. What they thought was one hedgehog turned out to be 3 of them. I had never seen 3 hedgehogs in one photo before. Apparently, the hedgehogs are doing well and are rampant in the garden. The camera has helped my friends to alert their neighbours and make sure that the hedgehogs aren’t disturbed.

    1. I love hedgehogs! My one over-riding disappointment about my visits to the UK is that I never got to see one.

I’ve just opened the Osprey cam up this morning, just in time to see her or him fly off, but the more interesting thing that just struck me: it’s 9am on Monday morning in the very heart of the city, and you can’t see a car, or a person, anywhere. Usually the scene in the background would be absolutely thronged with people and automobiles. Stage 4 party time.

      1. LoL. That cam allows you to check up on ALL of the urban wildlife! I know what you mean, tho. I live in the centre of the city and when lockdown began, the streets were eerily empty.

Btw, I don’t know if it is by design but I can’t comment on your posts from the WP app. Is that happening to you too or do I need to check settings on my end? It’s no big deal as I don’t like typing on the kindle, but I thought I’d let you know.

        1. Weird – I can type comments on your posts from the WP desktop app, but I can’t like anything or post on your actual blog page. When I try, I get the flashing white box that pops up and disappears instantly.

          1. That is so weird. But I haven’t even built my own site. I’m using one of the templates and I am pretty sure I have not changed any of the advanced settings.

    1. You’re welcome! It seems the webmasters of the site are experiencing a learning curve concerning webcam streams, so it’s not always on during our night hours, but your night is our morning, so there’s a good chance he’ll see some peregrine action. 🙂
